[겨울학기][불합격] 뮌헨 공대

독일 쵝오의 공대 뮌헨공대.. 다만 석사 tution이 무료에서 6천 유로로 인상된 이후 (한학기 기준임;) 좀 고민스러운 매물이 되었다. 물론 미국과 한국에 비교하면 매우 저렴한데, 교육 평준화가 되었다고 주장하는 독일에서 다니기엔 조금 고민스러운 매물이 아닌가 싶다.

그럼에도 붙으면 걍 다니려고 했는데 서탈했다. 근데 귀찮아서 어필을 안했다.

왜 귀찮았을까... 뭔가 바빴던 것 같기도 하다..

과를 두개나 지원해봐서 내용이 좀 많아서 베를린 공대 포스팅처럼 글을 좀 많이 접겠다. 스압주의

CSE

내 Module Handbook 안읽어본 것 같은데.. (왜냐하면... 요건에 해당하는 모든 과목 그 이상을 들었다) 귀찮아서 항의하지 않았다. 맞다.. 이 당시 배가 부른 상태였다. (어째서였는지는 기억 안남. 뭔가 당시에 붙은 학교들이 꽤나 있었던걸로 기억함)

째튼,, Reddit 에서 서치를 좀 해봤는데 보통 이런 경우, 학교에 정정 요청 이메일을 보내면 대충 스르륵 넘겼던 지원자의 서류를 다시 검토해 주고 대체로 붙는 경우가 많았다.

 

지원 방법

요구 사항이 허벌나게 많다. 일단 uni-assist를 통해 VPD 를 발급받아 두어야 한다 (한달 조금 넘게 걸려서 옴). 이 VPD를 학교 포털 지원 시 첨부해야 한다.

• 요구사항은 아니지만, Reference Letter 도 첨부할 수 있다. 아마도 가산점으로 작용하지 않을까 싶다.

참고로, Curricular Analysis 는 CSE Assessment process 페이지에서 다운로드 받을 수 있다. 별건 아니고, 어떤 수업을 들었는지 엑셀에 채우면 점수가 자동으로 환산되는 엑셀이다.

Assessment Process

Stage 1 - 서류심사

아래 방식으로 점수를 매긴다 : 

• Academic background and relevant competencies (max. 40 points) (*):
  • Solid basic knowledge in mathematics (10 points)
  • Solid basic programming skills (10 points)
  • Solid fundamentals and subject-specific knowledge in engineering and/or natural sciences
    • Fundamentals (10 points)
    • Subject-specific knowledge (10 points)
• Grade Point Average (max. 15 points) (*)
• Motivational Letter (plus CV and additional documents) (max. 25 points)

≥55 points → Admission (✓)
40–54 points → Proceed to Stage 2
<40 points → Rejection (✗)

 

즉, 여기서 55점 이상이면 Stage2 까지 가지 않아도 자동 합격이다. 나는 제출 당시 당연히 55 점이 넘을 거라고 확신했는데 39 점이라고 데드라인도 전에 조건에 안맞는다고 알림이 왔다. 항의하기 귀찮은데 도대체 어디서 깎였을까? 의문이다.

Stage 2 - 인터뷰

Requirements는 만족하지만, 1차에 합격하지 못했을 경우 회생의 기회가 주어진다.

인터뷰 심사 내용 :

You'll be invited to an admission interview where we will ask about your motivation, background, previous experience, etc. (max. 45 points)

The scores from (*) and stage 2 are then added together:

≥60 points → Admission (✓)
<60 points → Rejection (✗)

CSE는 DEA에 비해 절차 및 점수 산정이 매우 간단한 편이다. DEA도 상세하게 기록해 두겠다.

오잉 이건 또 왜떨어진거지? 아예 지원 자격 불충분이라 assessment 도 되지 않았다. 

 

또야?

 

마음에 걸리는 점은 내가 학부 informatics가 아니란 점.. 독일 지원하면서 느낀게 석사 진학 시, 동일 학부만 대체로 진학이 가능하다. 운이 좋으면 curriculum analysis를 꼼꼼하게 읽어주거나 입학 시험 점수로 결정하는 학교들도 있지만, 대체로 지원자가 많은 학교들은 서류에서 걍 이름만으로도 탈락한 경험이 좀 있어서 이번에도 그런 케이슨가? 싶다.

 

지원 방법

아래 항목들이 필요하다. CSE에 비해서 서류가 꽤나 많은 편 :

• A statement of reasons explaining why you have chosen this master’s program and TUM specifically (max. 2 pages)
• Your CV/résumé
• A scientific essay of approx. 1,000 words on a specified topic (see below)
• Form "Analysis of the Curriculum" (see below)
• Bachelor's degree certificate, including a list of courses and grades OR an official transcript of records. Documents not issued in German or English must be translated and notarized by a sworn translator.
• Curriculum (module descriptions, course catalog or syllabus) of the underlying university degree; this document is very important for the check of the academic qualification!
• Proof of your English language proficiency
• Preliminary documentation from uni-assist for all applicants with a Bachelor's degree from outside the EU/EEA
• Certificates from professional training or additional qualifications related to the program (e.g. participation in research competitions, internships, etc.) (not mandatory)
• A passport photo
• A copy of your passport

2025년도 Essay Topics

• Topic 1:Should we move data and computation to the cloud, and when?
• Topic 2:Which new challenges for computer science arise from recent advances in deep learning, e.g., autonomous driving, Google's LaMDA, and Deepfakes?
• Topic 3:With the recent development of powerful CPUs, is it still necessary to write highly efficient code?

위 세 주제 중 한가지 선택하면 되고, 나는 Topic 1을 선택하였다.

 

Curriculum Analysis

CSE 와 마찬가지로 curriculum analysis 를 작성해야 한다.

 

맥북 유저인 경우, 반드시 Chrome에서 작성하는걸 권장한다. 나도 알고싶지 않았다... 다만, Safari에서 열심히 작성하고 print as pdf를 하니,.. 마크업 양식이 깨져서 수학 파트가 가려서 작성한 항목들이 누락되어 프린트가 된다 (학교 로고에 절묘하게 2-3과목이 겹쳐져서 가려짐..)

 

따라서 앱등이라면 반드시 크롬으로 작성하는걸 추천한다. 폼은 아래 사이트에서 작성하면 된다 :

Assessment Process

위 서류들을 전부 제출하고 나면, Assessment Process를 거치게 된다. 내가 TUM 홈페이지보다 정리 잘한 것 같아서 뿌듯하다.

채점 방식이 꽤나 개성적인데, TUM은 스테이지를 1,2단계로 나누었지만 실제로는 4 단계이다. 특이한건, 모든 서류를 서류 심사 단계에서 하는게 아닌 독특한 방식.. 아래 스테이지를 보면 이해 되실 것,,

각 스테이지 별로 최종 합격자 or 탈락하는 방식

 

Stage 0 - 서류심사 (1)

심사 항목 : Curriculum Analysis
다른 process를 읽어보면, curriculum analysis의 배점은 50 점인 것으로 추측할 수 있다. 이 과정에서 40점 이하의 경우 서류 탈락을 하게 된다. 명시적으로 써있진 않지만, 대략적으로 프로세스를 봤을 때 그렇게 보인다.

 

내가 탈락한 스테이지. 아예 Assessment process 로 넘어가지도 않는 서류탈락이다.

 

쉐이칸샹 쉐이칸샹 부승샹 부승샹 누가 상상이나 했겠어. 분명 위에 있는거 전부 만족 + 초과 만족하는데 어째서일까? 하지만 가지도 않을 학교에 항의할 여력이 없었다.

 

Stage 1 - 서류심사 (2)

≥51 points →Admission (✓)
curriculum analysis : 50점
gpa : 7 점

40 < score <51 points → Stage 2
일단 stage 0을 통과 했다면, 제출했던 다른 서류들도 심사에 더해서 점수를 낸다. 40점이하라면, stage 0 에서 이미 탈락함.

 

 

Stage 2 - 서류 심사 (3)

≥85 points → Admission (✓)
curriculum analysis : 50점 만점
gpa : 7점 만점
scientific essay : 27 점 만점
motivation letter: 24점 만점
(총 108 점 만점)

 

TUM 에서는 Stage2 가 끝이지만 서류가 길어질까봐 전부 Stage 1,2에 우겨 넣은 것 같다.

실제 Stage 2에서는, 제출했던 Essay와 Motivation Letter을 누적 점수에 합산하여 최종 합격 여부를 가려낸다. 만일 이 과정에서 70점 이상 84점 미만이라면 Stage 3로 넘어간다.

 

 

Stage 3 - Test

≥85 points → Admission (✓)
<84 points -> Rejection 
curriculum analysis : 50점 만점
gpa : 7점 만점
test : 51점 만점

 

마지막 합격 기회인 스테이지,, Stage 2까지는 누적 점수였지만 여기서 점수체계가 다시한번 바뀐다.

Stage 0에서의 curriculum anlayisis 점수 + gpa + test 점수를 합산하여 마지막 합격자를 보트에 태워준다.

 

참고로, 학교 홈페이지 중 admission interview 라고 써있는 홈페이지도 있지만 실제로는 치험을 치르니까 괜히 희망회로 굴리지는 말자.

In the initial stages, the grades you obtained during your Bachelor’s program, as well as your written documents, will be evaluated using a point system. 시험 내용 

The written test takes 90 minutes and includes approx. 20-30 questions (in English). The content of the test is based on the contents of the B.Sc. Informatics and includes the following topics:

1. General Foundations (max. 12 points):
   Ability of abstract, logical and system-oriented thinking and of formalizing approaches to solutions.
2. Mathematical Foundations (max. 13 points):
   Knowledge from undergraduate studies in the areas of Stochastics, Combinatorics, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Numerical Programming.
3. Foundations in Theory of Computation (max. 13 points):
   Knowledge from undergraduate studies in the areas of Automata Theory, Complexity Theory, Algorithms and Data Structures, Verification.
4. Practical Foundations of Informatics (max. 13 points):
   Knowledge from undergraduate studies in the areas of Databases, Computer Architecture, Programming in Java.
5. If you are invited to the test, we will send you well in advance an email with detailed information about procedure, schedule and arrival.

탈락 후기

떡줄놈은 생각도 없었는데 혼자 고민한 놈이 됌. 웁스,, 부끄럽게도 당연히 합격할 줄 알았다. 사실 학비가 독일에서 제일 비싸서, 똑똑한 인도 친구들이 지원 안하겠지 싶어서 합격할 줄 알았다. 그런데 전부 requirements not met이라니.. 허거덩덩스..

 

가장 원하던 학교 및 학과였지만 학비 때문에 몇달간을 고민하고 있었는데, 서탈해버려서 홀가분해졌다. 이것은 하늘의 뜻이렸다. 고민하지 말라고 광탈시켜주셨나보다. 공부나 해야지 쩝.. 아좌좌~
